The Railway Recruitment Boards (RRBs) recruit Technicians for Indian Railways in two grades: Technician Grade I (Signal) and Technician Grade III. Selection is by computer-based tests (CBT), followed by document verification and a medical.

ExamForge gives you 10 free, timed RRB Technician mock tests of 92 to 100 questions each, covering Mathematics, General Intelligence and Reasoning, Basic Science and Engineering, and General Awareness. Every question has an explanation after you submit. The question bank is in English only. Your first three sets need no signup.

The real CBT deducts one-third of a mark for every wrong answer. ExamForge does not, so take a third off for each wrong answer to see your exam-style score.

Exam pattern

CBT-1 only screens candidates; those shortlisted take a second CBT that carries the merit marks. ExamForge sets mix the four parts and give one minute for each question, which is slower than the real exam, so use them to learn the material first and build speed second.

Syllabus

Questions are set at Class 10 and ITI level, with the technical weight in Basic Science and Engineering.

Mathematics

Arithmetic and mensuration.

  • Number system, BODMAS, HCF and LCM
  • Percentage, ratio, average, profit and loss
  • Time and work, speed and distance
  • Algebra, geometry and mensuration
  • Trigonometry and statistics

General Intelligence and Reasoning

The largest part of CBT-1.

  • Analogy, classification and series
  • Coding-decoding and mathematical operations
  • Blood relations, directions and ranking
  • Syllogism and Venn diagrams
  • Mirror images and figure counting

Basic Science and Engineering

Class 10 science and the trade basics.

  • Motion, force, work, energy and power
  • Heat, light, sound and magnetism
  • Electricity, circuits and measuring instruments
  • Materials, metals, acids and bases
  • Basic engineering drawing and tools

General Awareness

Current affairs and railways.

  • Current affairs, sports and awards
  • Indian history, geography and polity
  • Science and technology news
  • Indian Railways facts

Eligibility

Requirements differ by grade and notice. In general:

Technician Grade I (Signal)
Diploma or degree in a relevant engineering stream, or a B.Sc. in Physics, Electronics, Computer Science, IT or a similar subject.
Technician Grade III
Matriculation (Class 10) with an ITI certificate or National Apprenticeship Certificate in a listed trade.
Age
Usually 18 to 33 years for Grade I and 18 to 30 for Grade III, with relaxation for reserved categories.

Selection process

Selection runs in this order.

  1. CBT-1

    The screening test above.

  2. CBT-2

A longer paper for those shortlisted, which carries the merit marks.

  3. Document verification and medical

Candidates on the merit list have their certificates and fitness checked before appointment.

Preparation tips

  • Treat Basic Science as a scoring section

It is the part where the technical background of candidates helps most. Revise Class 9 and 10 Physics and basic electricity.

  • Learn the reasoning patterns first

It has the most questions in CBT-1, and most question types repeat.

  • Mind the penalty

With −1/3 per wrong answer, mark only the options you can defend, and use explanations to see where you guessed.
